What is asbestos and where it has often been used

Asbestos is a natural fibrous mineral, and is operated in a number of countries around the world.  Historically, it was a mineral that is popular for use in the construction due to the fact that it is sustainable, flexible, resistant to chemical attack, excellent insulation and capable of withstanding high temperatures.  Even the name itself comes from the Greek language where it means "one-extinguishable."

To the United Kingdom, asbestos has been used since the industrial revolution, when it was first used as insulation.  Since then, it has been used in various applications such as fire-retardant coatings, bricks, pipe and lining of boiler lagging.

There are three main forms of asbestos that occur naturally.  The first is called "chrysotile", or asbestos white and is the most commonly used type.   It was generally mixed with cement to form sheets of roof, corrugated, or used to make flat sheets for walls and floors.  Extremely flexible, it can be spun and woven as the fabric which makes it ideal as clothing or insulation same fire proof.  Considered to be dangerous for health, was prohibited at the United Kingdom in 1999.  It is estimated that this type represents up to 95% of all asbestos in buildings.
